Daily Madden: Roger Clemens As A Skeeter
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - 50-year-old pitcher Roger Clemens is expected to start for the Sugar Land Skeeters Saturday after signing with the Independent Atlantic League team.
And former Major Leaguer Bill 'Spaceman' Lee is scheduled to start for the San Rafael Pacifics Thursday. At age 65, he'll be the oldest pitcher to pitch in a professional game.
"Baseball does have that," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "Their tradition and their veteran players and their all time greats -- I think they hold them up a little longer than they do in other sports... Of course, it's easier (in baseball.) A 65 year old guy is not going to come play a football game. A 50 year old guy like Clemens isn't going to come and play quarterback in any kind of tackle league."
Third round draft pick Nick Foles replaced an injured Michael Vick in Philadelphia's 27-17 pre-season win over the Patriots Monday night. "(Foles) kind of handled himself like he belonged," John said, noting he had a good chance to be Vick's backup.
"(It's a big deal) if you're the second guy to Michael Vick. I mean Michael Vick is just a play or two away in any game from going out of that game."
38-year-old Derek Jeter went four for five with a home run for the Yankees in New York's 9-6 loss to the White Sox.
"Derek Jeter is really something," Madden said. "You talk about all-time greats and guys you build a statue for - at a later age he's having a great year." (8:10)
