Daily Madden: RGIII Looking Like Old Self
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III ran 11 times for a season-high 84 yards in the Redskins 45-41 victory over Chicago Sunday. RGIII also completed 18 of 29 passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns.
"They're starting to come on now," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "You can just see each game RGIII is getting better. Remember when he played out here in Oakland and the Raiders beat him? He couldn't get away from the defensive linemen. His speed wasn't back. I remember saying at the time that he's going to get better. And it's going to take him this whole year to get better. And if he doesn't get hurt again in the process of getting better, he's going to be back to himself maybe at the end of this year, but definitely next year... You can just see that he's feeling better about it, he's feeling more confident about it, and everyone else is feeling better about him."
Elsewhere, a rare penalty during a missed field goal attempt gave the New York Jets a second chance and an overtime victory over the New England Patriots Sunday.
"The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was one guy pushing his own guy into another guy," Madden said. "That started when they used to overload on the center (on field goal defense)... They'd put a guy on each shoulder and then a guy behind each one of them pushing them. So they'd put an overload in the middle and just gang up on the center. So they decided that the center was an unprotected player and getting four guys on him wasn't right... that it was pretty dangerous." (6:30)
