Daily Madden: Remembering Friend And Boxing Legend Angelo Dundee
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Legendary boxing trainer Angelo Dundee, who worked the corner with Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard among others, died Wednesday at age 90. John Madden considered him a good friend.
"He was just a regular person and always happy," Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "You think that boxing guys have to walk around like tough guys or something, and that was never Angelo."
Madden said Dundee was the best at what he did.
"Angelo was one of those guys that you wanted in your corner on fight night. That was his big thing. I mean, he could motivate fighters. It's easy to talk to a guy before a fight, during the week in the training and all that stuff... But then you get into the third round and then the fifth round and then the tenth round and then the twelfth round...they always weren't as anxious to get off that stool as they were earlier. And that was one of the strongest things that Angelo did is keep him going, keep him motivated, keep him up toward the end of a tough fight."
New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw has been playing with a fracture in his foot, but is expected to play in the Super Bowl Sunday. Madden said that's not unusual.
"Some of those things you can continue to play with as long as you can take the pain," John said. "After the first regular season game, there's no one that is 100 percent healthy...You see these guys that have been through a whole season, the playoffs and the Super Bowl, and they say, 'Are you 100 percent?' I don't know what the answer is going to be, but I guarantee you it's not 100 percent."(7:10)
