Daily Madden: Raiders Need More Than The Black Hole To Intimidate Opponents
OAKLAND (KCBS) - Among the fans at the Raiders-Lions preseason game in Oakland Friday night will be those in various scary forms of silver and black in the notorious Black Hole.
"A lot of people think the Black Hole is an old Raiders thing,"John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "It's not. That's a nouveaux thing. When I coached in the 70s, there was no Black Hole."
But Madden said there was a section of intimidating Raiders fans in his day.
"The toughest fans were the ones that were straight across the field and behind the visiting bench and very, very close. You talk about the teams that didn't like to come in and the stuff that they didn't like and the part of the crowd that they didn't like, it was that area right there."
Madden said the Black Hole gets a lot of attention, but isn't a factor on the way the team plays.
"If you ever win, everyone wants to take credit for it. But believe me that has nothing to do with it... But if you win they will take credit." (7:05)
