Daily Madden: Raiders Look For Attitude; 49ers Look For A Backup QB
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The 49ers offense struggled with second string quarterback Blaine Gabbert at the helm in Thursday night's 23-3 preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
"We say that these games are meaningless and preseason games don't mean anything," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "Then after the game if someone or some group doesn't play well (and) they lose, we sure do evaluate it, don't we? So what was meaningless on Thursday morning, wasn't meaningless on Friday morning for Gabbert... You just hope that it is the first preseason game, and then you work another week and you get better and better, and that there is something there. And if not, at some point you might have to start looking for another (backup quarterback)." Madden thought the 49ers defense also looked flat.
"They seemed to be on the field a lot. They couldn't get off the field. It looked like to me that they were catching blocks a lot rather than pushing guys back."
The Raiders start their preseason schedule Friday night in Minnesota.
"I would kind of look for attitude," Madden said. "If you could say that this really is a different team, I mean the Raiders really look different now, I think that's the big thing, rather than picking out an individual here or there, and make too big a thing of it right off the bat." (6:40)
