Daily Madden: Raiders Let One Slip Away At The End
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The 1-4 Oakland Raiders held their own with the undefeated Falcons in Atlanta Sunday before giving up a long field goal to lose 23-20. "I think the Raiders played very well under tough circumstances," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew.
"Playing an undefeated team at their place when you're kind of beat up and not doing well and things haven't been going well, I thought the effort they put up there was great." But Madden questioned the Raiders' defensive scheme after tying the game late in the fourth quarter. "They went to a three man rush and dropped eight, and it looked like a relatively soft defense. They only rushed three, didn't put any pressure at all on them, and I think that helps a guy like (Falcons quarterback) Matt Ryan." The Falcons were able to set up a last second 55-yard field goal to win the game.
Robert Griffin III led the Washington Redskins to a 38-26 win over the Vikings Sunday. The rookie quarterback rushed for 138 yards, including a 76 yard run that was the longest by an NFL quarterback in 15 years. "He's always had this reputation as having great speed, but he hasn't had the opportunity to show it," Madden said. "But that one there, when he got to the outside and he got a step, I mean he was going... Someone told him on the sideline that he felt him go by."
