Daily Madden: Raiders Have Something To Build On

OAKLAND (KCBS) - The Oakland Raiders looked much improved in a close loss to the San Diego Chargers last Sunday. They face the Arizona Cardinals in Oakland this Sunday.

"The Raiders need something good to happen, and I think (quarterback) Derek Carr may be the first step in the direction," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.

Carr threw for 283 yards and four TDs in the 31-28 loss.

"Derek Carr is the real deal," John said. "And that's a big thing for the Raiders because they've been looking for a quarterback for years. Now I think they can continue as the years go on to build a team around Derek Carr."

At 4-1, the Cardinals lead their division, but Madden said they still have a lot to prove.

"They're a lot like Cincinnati," Madden said. "You think that they're good, and then when you think they're good they're probably going to not look that good. And then when you think they're not good, they're going to come back and win."

Madden said free agency has made it more difficult to predict which teams will end the regular season as Super Bowl contenders.

"Teams change every year," John said.

"Since free agency, I always felt you can't really say what's going to happen that year until the half-way point. And the longer we go this way, the more I think it's three quarters... Until we play three quarters of the season, you can't really tell who the good teams are that year." (6:05)
