Daily Madden: Raiders Finally Shine; Vikings Run On 49ers
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - The Oakland Raiders rebounded from losses in their first two games and a mediocre start Sunday to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-31 at O.co Coliseum. "The Raiders really didn't look good in the first half," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew, "but the way they hung in there, came out in the second half, and in the fourth quarter just took control of the game and won it -- it was good to see. Oakland needed a win."
Raiders running back Darren McFadden rushed for 113 yards on 18 carries. "When you come out and show them right away that not only can you run the ball, but when you break away the defense can't catch you, that's pretty good," Madden said.
Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers stumbled in Minnesota, losing to the Vikings 24-13. "That was based on the Minnesota Vikings running (game)," John said. "Once you can run, you've got your play-action pass and you just go from there." How will the 49ers coaching staff respond to the loss? "Right off the bat, you have to go over what you did wrong," Madden said. "You have to straighten it out, you have to correct it. You have to get where everyone knows what it was and then not let it happen again. And then you get on to the next game."
