Daily Madden: Playing Through Pain And Injury
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter fought through an elbow injury to win Wednesday night's World Series Game One against the Texas Rangers.
"Adrenalin is an amazing thing," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "When you play professional sports, you're going to hurt. You're going to have injuries. You're going to be sore, and you just have to be ready to play the next one. No one is every 100%."
John recalled asking Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk before a game if he was 100%.
"'I'll tell you the last time I was 100%,'" Faulk had said.
"The last time he was healthy was the day before he played his first NFL game," recalled Madden.
Should the NFL be concerned about unsuccessful teams losing games on purpose to improve their standing in the draft?
"We know that once a team in the NFL clinches a position in the playoffs, in my mind they do flop," Madden said. "Some teams have rested a heck of a lot of players, lost the game and didn't care. You hope that doesn't sneak in on the other end, where teams that are looking for a draft pick could do the same thing," said the former coach. "There's only one way to play a game, and that's to win it. When you do anything else, for whatever reason, it's wrong." (7:40)
