Daily Madden: Pacquiao-Bradley Revisited
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The five judges who reviewed the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley fight for the WBO all scored Pacquiao the winner, contrary to the original split decision in favor of Bradley.
"Everyone thought that," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "I watched it live and I was shocked when Bradley got the decision. I watched it with a group of people and they were all shocked. I talked to people who went to the fight and they were shocked. I didn't talk to anyone along the way who thought that Bradley won that fight."
Madden said the quality of judging in boxing is questionable.
"Officiating in boxing, especially in the state of Nevada, has always had a smell to it," Madden said. "If you want a sure victory, you need to knock a guy out. You don't leave it to the judges."
The next step is most likely a rematch, which John expects Pacquiao to win easily.
"Bradley can't hurt him and Pacquiao knows that," Madden said. "So he's going to have so much confidence it just won't be a match at all."
In college football, BCS commissioners are backing a plan that calls for a committee to select four teams to vie for a national championship each year.
"I don't think a national championship tournament is ever going to work," Madden said. "The argument is going to be how about the fifth and the sixth (teams)? In hockey didn't the eighth seed just win? Having a championship that is earned by playing it has some merit, but when you apply it to college football, which is regional by nature, it just doesn't work." (6:55)
