Daily Madden: NY Giants Incident Hazing Or Horseplay?
NEW YORK (KCBS) - New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin called it inappropriate - the training camp dunking of second year defensive back Prince Amukamara in a tub of ice water. John Madden agreed.
"I don't think it's okay," Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "I think it's one of those things that maybe started out as a joke and horsing around...Sometimes it leads to something like that."
Madden said it doesn't look like a hazing incident.
"I don't think that comes under the category of hazing, when you throw a guy in a cold tub and he's a second year guy... If there is hazing, it's for rookies. I was never a big believer. I never liked that because you could push to the edge a little too much."
Madden said he's sure the Giants coaching staff has addressed the issue.
"Just knowing Tom Coughlin and how he feels about it, and the Giants organization, I'm sure that that's something that won't happen again."
One baseball writer suggested Amukamara was targeted because some players considered him 'soft.' Madden disagreed.
"I don't think in my life I ever called an NFL player soft. I don't think there is such a thing... To get in the NFL and to play for a year, you have to get all the way through high school, you have to get all the way through college as one of the best players, you have to get through training camp and make the team, play a year. And if you do all those things, I guarantee you there's no one soft in this league." (7:30)
