Daily Madden: No Big Speech Needed For Super Bowl Players
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Are the Super Bowl coaches busy writing inspirational speeches for their players? John Madden doesn't think so. "You've been talking to them every day for six months, so there's nothing you're going to say that's new," Madden told the KCBS morning crew.
"It shouldn't be more than a few words. If there's any player in the world that can't get up for this, they can't get up for anything."
Madden said he prepared for coaching in the Super Bowl long before he got there with his Raiders team. "I coached in the Pro Bowl a lot," Madden said. "I'd always talk to the players who were in the Super Bowl about how they handled things, what they did, what was right, what was wrong, what was good, what was bad. So I didn't have to wait until I got there to ask. I had been asking and accumulating stuff for years."
Madden said the coaches and teams need to be ready for the extra attention. "The guy that complains the most about things that they have to do usually loses," Madden said. "They call those things distractions. They're really not distractions, they're responsibilities ... When I hear people or coaches or players talk about 'you know, we have so many distractions,' they're only distractions if you make them or let them be distractions."
