Daily Madden: More QB Shuffling For 49ers
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The 49ers have reportedly signed backup quarterback John Skelton after cutting rookie QB B.J. Daniels.
"You have an ongoing evaluation," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.
Madden said it appears the 49ers had lost faith in Daniels.
"I always had the idea that if I get to a point where I know a guy can't play, then I'd rather get rid of him and bring in someone that I don't know if they can play or not," said Madden.
The 49ers face the Texans Sunday night. Madden expects Matt Schaub to start at quarterback for Houston despite his recent struggles.
"Schaub is Houston's guy. He's their quarterback," John said. "He's just in a slump. It's not one of those things, you know, 'should we start T.J. Yates.'"
Madden said he doesn't think the Texans' players-only meeting after their loss to Seattle will have a positive impact.
"I hated those things." the former coach said. "Whenever we'd lose a game, that's the first thing I would say. I'd say 'Okay, here's what we need. We have to get better, we have to correct the things that we did wrong. But I'm going to tell you what we don't need. We don't need one of those stupid players' meetings."
On a separate topic, did Pirates fans rattle Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto in Tuesday night's wild card game in Pittsburgh? Fans were chanting Cueto's name in unison before he gave up a home run to Russell Martin.
"If it got to you, you wouldn't get to the Major Leagues, would you?" John said. "I don't think it works. That stuff has never won a game."
Cueto gave up four runs in three and a third innings in the Reds' 6-2 loss. (8:20)
