Daily Madden: More Evidence The NFL Is A Passing League
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers was one of three NFL quarterbacks who threw for more than 400 yards without an interception Sunday. "They're saying now that Aaron Rodgers is the best quarterback in the NFL, and I'm starting to lean that way myself," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.
"I've always been a Peyton Manning-Tom Brady guy. Do you go week by week or do you go whole body of work? It's hard to put (Rodgers) over Peyton Manning right now. But when you really think about it, it doesn't make any difference."
Madden said the big numbers put up by quarterbacks are part of a trend in the NFL. "Obviously it's a passing league," Madden said. "A lot of (the passes) are screens, bubble screens, check-downs, short passing. And maybe Bill Walsh was the guy that started all this, where you throw short passes in lieu of runs.
"The other part of it is there's more pistol, there's more shot-gun, there's more multiple wide receivers. The rules favor the offense generally, and specifically the passing game," said Madden.
Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson of the Arizona Cardinals completed a pass, caught a pass and made a tackle in Arizona's 25-21 victory over the Lions Sunday. Should he play on offense as well as defense every game? "He's so good on defense and so valuable there," Madden said. "You don't want to do too much with him (on offense) where he can't be as effective on defense as he is."
