Daily Madden: Manning's Over-Hyped Debut As A Bronco
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - All eyes and many cameras were on Peyton Manning Thursday as he stepped onto the practice field for his first appearance in a Denver Bronco's jersey. "They start evaluating him in warm-up. It's crazy," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew.
"(It's) the first day in camp, they're not in pads, they're just kind of getting acclimated here, no one's running very fast and they aren't doing much," said Madden. "And here they got every camera on him watching every move, and probably worse than that, evaluating him."
Manning was released by the Indianapolis Colts after 14 seasons following a nerve injury in his neck that sidelined him for last year. Is he fully recovered? "You're not going to find any of those things out in the first half hour of the first practice," Madden said.
In other NFL news, Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones-Drew reportedly won't show up in camp. The Jaguars have refused to renegotiate the final two years of the contract for 2011's NFL rushing leader.
"He's the best player on their team and he wants to get paid for it," Madden said. "That's on one hand. On the other hand, the team is not very good. I'm not sure they're going to go anywhere with him or anywhere without him."
In baseball, the Giants still lead their division and the A's are 10-1 since the All-Star break. "It's really great for Bay Area baseball," Madden said. "When you have one team that is playing well and has a chance to be in the playoffs and stuff, that's good. But when you have two local teams playing as well as the Giants and A's are right now, you really have to embrace that as something special."
