Daily Madden: Luck Still Looks Certain To Be Top Pick
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Peyton Manning's future as an NFL quarterback remains uncertain due to his health following a series of neck surgeries, making Stanford star Andrew Luck's prospects of becoming the top overall pick even more likely.
"There was a time from mid-season on that (the Colts) had a plan that they would have liked to have had him play, even if it was just one game last season, just to prove that he was okay to play," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "He tried, and just wasn't ready."
Regardless of whether Manning returns to Indianapolis or not, John said he still expects the Colts to draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with their number one pick.
"You look at Peyton Manning's age, and then the situation, and it's not going to be a long term thing," Madden said. "They would look at (Manning) for the short-term thing and they would obviously look at Andrew Luck for the long-term. Not unlike Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers."
The former coach said most of the draft speculation centers on another college quarterback.
"Between now and the draft time there could be a lot changes and a lot of different talk, but everything that I hear is that they're trying to pry high draft choices loose to get (Baylor QB) Griffin III," Madden said. "You know that second, third, fourth (pick)... they seem to be working more on those slots. I think the Andrew Luck thing is just a given to the Colts." (9:15)
