Daily Madden: Lineman Get Their Due As Hall Of Fame Turns 50
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - John Madden is back in the Madden Cruiser on his way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame festivities in Canton, Ohio.
"It's a reunion of all the players that you've known, players that you coached, players that you've been in the Hall of Fame with," Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "This is the 50th anniversary, so we have more Hall of Fame people coming back this year than ever."
Madden's favorite event?
"They still have the Nitschke luncheon, which is just the Hall of Famers, no one else. And anyone and everyone can speak, and some of the thoughts and speeches and things that guys bring up there are amazing."
Madden's old position is well-represented in this year's Hall of Fame class.
"That was a real test for the group of people who vote for the Hall of Famers," John said. "Jonathan Ogden and Larry Allen were two of the best players in pro football, but they were offensive linemen. On the one hand, these are the two best guys here and they have to go in. But on the other hand, will they put in two offensive linemen in one class in the Hall of Fame? And they did. In fact, they put Warren Sapp in also, a defensive lineman. So three linemen going into this Hall of Fame (class) is really pretty big." Madden was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006. (6:45)
