Daily Madden: Lessons From The NFL Combine
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Former Texas receiver Marquise Goodwin ran a 4.2 40 yard dash at the NFL combine Sunday.
"That doesn't excite me," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "Most of this stuff -- all of this stuff -- really doesn't mean a dog gone thing if the guy can't play... Because they run the fastest time, jump the highest jump or the longest jump or whatever, does that equate to how they play? And sometimes, I think the two get intertwined."
Madden said coaches should have a good idea about who the best players are before they go to the combine.
"You know these players pretty well, and then all you want to do is kind of check to see if they're still there, if they haven't had any injuries, if they've had injuries, how they've done since then, and kind of get to know them a little better. But that's basically it. If you don't know what kind of a football player a guy is before you go to the combine, then you haven't done your job."
CBS Sports reports the 49ers have a deal in place to trade quarterback Alex Smith, but didn't name a team. Speculation is focused on the Kansas City Chiefs.
"I can't understand how these guys can get a scoop that Alex Smith is going to be traded and there's a deal done in principle, and they can't get who it's done with," Madden said. (8:55)
