Daily Madden: Kick It Like Beckham?
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The Mirror Online in the UK is reporting that an NFL team scout has approached retired soccer star David Beckham about a tryout as a kicker. John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew that seeing Beckham in an NFL uniform is possible, but unlikely.
"When you take the age and how long it would take to adjust, he's run out of time," Madden said. Beckham is 38. "Obviously he can get the kicking part of it you would assume relatively quickly. But you have to get the timing. It goes with the snap from the center, to the holder and the hold, and the rush and all that. That takes awhile, like a couple of years. You just don't go in and say 'I played soccer therefore I can kick a field goal.'"
Madden said starting as a kickoff specialist would be much easier.
"That would be a start... Field goals would be much more difficult," he said.
Signing a European super star would fit with the NFL's expansion plans.
"They're pushing harder than ever to get over there (to Europe)," John said. "That's a big thing for (the NFL). Eventually they'd like to have a couple of teams over there. That doesn't seem real practical, but I do know that the NFL and owners are pushing for that to happen." (7:05)
