Daily Madden: Kershaw Spoils Giants' Opener
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - It was a pitchers' duel between the Giants' Matt Cain and the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw in Los Angeles Monday afternoon.
"The way that thing started with Matt Cain going and Kershaw going, I didn't think they were going to score any runs," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.
Then in the eigth inning, Kershaw hit his first major league home run to score the first run in the season opener for both teams. The Dodgers won 4-0.
"Sometimes you watch a guy and you say that he's unhittable. And on the day that they honor Sandy Kaufax, and Kershaw comes out and does that, it kind of made a little sense."
Hall-of-Famer Kaufax threw out the first pitch after a thunderous greeting from a full house.
Pac-12 officials investigated their coordinator of basketball officiating for his comments about Arizona's coach during the Pac 12 tournament last month.
Ed Rush allegedly told a group of referees that he'd reward them with $5,000 or a trip to Cancun if they ejected coach Sean Miller or called a technical foul against him. Referee Michael Irving did call a technical on Miller in Arizona's two point loss to UCLA.
"The worst thing would be being in with gamblers and throwing a game," Madden said. "The next worst thing - and this is what I was always against - is any premeditation. Anything you decide you're going to do before it happens should never go on in officiating."
The Pac-12 commissioner said investigators determined the comment was made in jest, but took steps "to ensure it does not happen again." (8:35)
