Daily Madden: Keeping An Eye On Bumgarner's Confidence
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Young Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner gave up a record-tying eight straight hits before leaving the game in the first inning Tuesday night as San Francisco lost to the Minnesota Twins 9-2.
Madden said his family wanted to change the channel when they saw the 8-0 deficit in the first inning. The former coach's perspective was "hey, that's interesting too."
"What you really guard against is losing confidence," Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "When you lose a game, you not only lose a game, but you lose some confidence. I don't care what level you are or how confident you are, if you don't have success, you lose confidence."
Madden said his concerns are more for the young pitcher than his teammates, who get to take the field Wednesday looking to turn the tables.
From the KCBS mailbag, a listener asked John why the Dallas Cowboys were known as "America's Team."
John said it started with team president and general manager Tex Schramm using the term. As the team became more successful, John said, their fan base grew.
"They started winning Super Bowls, and it became a reality," John said. When the Cowboys were on the road, they "had more people in the lobby waiting to meet Cowboys and get autographs than any team in the league." (8:15)
