Daily Madden: Kaepernick's College Coach On QB's Evolution
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Colin Kaepernick's college coach, Chris Ault of Nevada, told John Madden and the KCBS Radio morning crew that Kaepernick's talent as a quarterback wasn't always evident.
"His second year is when we started to notice that he had some exceptional, exceptional speed," Ault said. "We really didn't know how fast he was because he ran the wing-T in high school. When he took over in 2008, when we put the read (offense) part of the offense in, we could see that he was an exceptional athlete."
John Madden said Kaepernick has surprised opposing NFL teams as well.
"I don't think the NFL has figured out how fast he is," Madden said. "You just look at the angles they take, and you know that they're fooled by his speed."
Ault said he first considered playing Kaepernick at a different position.
"When we recruited him, he was okay, he was nothing special," Ault said. "His throwing motion was a little awkward and his running ability was okay - it wasn't anything special. But you could see he was a good athlete. He worked at getting faster every year he was with us... When he turns the corner and is going north to south - with those long legs - he can flat run."
Ault said that the pistol and read option offense will be used more at the pro level.
"I think there is a place for the read (in the NFL)," Ault said. "I think it makes the defense (have) one more thing that they've got to defend."
Madden said even teams without a running quarterback will change their offensive strategies.
"You can run the pistol without the read or without the quarterback having to be a runner," Madden said. "I would bet that next year all 32 teams in the NFL teams have the pistol in their offense." (8:40)
