Daily Madden: John's Team Takes Bocce Trophy
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - John Madden and his Ruby Hills team hoisted the trophy with John's name on it Wednesday, winning the Madden-Mariucci Battle of the Bay Charity Bocce Tournament.
"It gives you the opportunity to practice humility," John told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "It was all about guys working hard, preparing, working together, being a team. It's all about your teammates."
48 teams took part in this year's event.
"We didn't make the playoffs the last few years, so we were disappointed in that," Madden said. "We just wanted to come back and get back in the playoffs, and one thing leads to another."
Former 49ers and Cal coach Steve Mariucci enjoyed the day, but not his team's showing.
"Poor ol' Mooch didn't even make the playoffs," John said. "He was really down-trodden. He's a good little player and a good guy."
The tournament has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local kids charities.
"That's really what it's all about," Madden said. "We joke and laugh and play bocce and it's fun and all that stuff, but it goes for a good cause... That's the thing that you can really feel good about."
The KCBS-Adams Pool Solutions team went 3-0 in the preliminaries, including Stan Bunger's quarter-inch win in a tied-game roll-off against the San Jose Sharks squad, but lost in the quarter-finals. (9:00)
