Daily Madden: Jahvid Best Honored For His Battle With Concussions
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Former Cal star and Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best was honored Tuesday with the NFL's Ed Block Courage award for his "steadfast dedication and determination" in trying to return to the field after suffering two more concussions last season. Best hasn't played since game six last year, and is sidelined through this season.
"He's probably not going to play again," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "When you're going on two years since your last concussion, it's probably better for him that he doesn't play."
The former coach talked to Best at the Lions training camp last summer.
"He was very optimistic that he'll be back and that he'll be okay, and that he still had some tests to pass... But whatever made it this long (a recovery) is probably the reason he shouldn't play again."
49ers wide receiver Kyle Williams and running back Kendall Hunter were injured on the same play in Sunday's victory over the Saints and probably won't play for up to a year.
"They're both young. I would think both of them will recover," Madden said.
Williams tore the ACL in his left knee and Hunter tore an Achilles tendon.
"Medicine today and rehab are so advanced. There's nothing with the Achilles or the knee that I think is career ending anymore, unless someone is at the end of a career." (8:00)
