Daily Madden: It's Time For Football
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - When the 4th of July rolls around, John Madden starts thinking about his favorite sport. "When I hear all that stuff -- the Tour de France, Wimbledon -- I'm ready for football," Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.
"I always started after the 4th, getting ready... up to the 4th of July was vacation, after that back to work," Madden said, noting that was true for him as a player in college, a coach in the NFL, and a pro football broadcaster.
NFL teams now open training camps at the end of July. When Madden was a coach, training camp started on July 5th. "It was a different era, it was a different time... (Now) the guys kind of work out year round, they're there in the building year round and all those things. At one time it wasn't that way. You would do nothing in the off-season and you needed training camp to get in shape to play the season. Now they use training camp more as a teaching tool."
