Daily Madden: It's Time For A Penalty Rules Change
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - In Seattle's playoff victory over Washington, Redskins quarterback RG III was knocked down after throwing a touchdown pass. The roughing the passing penalty resulted in a kickoff from the 50 instead of the 35, pretty much a wash for kickers who routinely put it in the end zone from the 35.
"That isn't enough and it is kind of a free shot situation," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew, noting the importance of protecting the quarterback. What's the solution? "They already got the touchdown, they got the score, so you can't give them another down to get the touchdown. You can't wait until their next series of plays offensively and give it to them... You could do the 15 after the kickoff. That would probably be the place to go with it."
Like 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, whose team faces the Packers in Saturday's NFC divisional playoff game, many in the NFL dreamed about playing in the Super Bowl as kids.
"The ones who thought about it at a very young age are usually the quarterbacks," Madden said.
"You don't grow up as a kid thinking you're going to be a lineman. You grow up as a kid thinking you're going to be a quarterback, running back, wide receiver. And then lo and behold, you grow into a lineman. No one thinks they're going to be a nose tackle." (7:40)
