Daily Madden: It's Holdout Time In The NFL
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Maurice Jones-Drew, the Bay Area high school and UCLA star running back, skipped a mandatory Jacksonville Jaguars minicamp in a contract dispute.
"He can do it now and take kind of a firm stand on it, because to be honest with you, he's not missing anything," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "If there's anyone who doesn't need a minicamp, it's a veteran running back in the NFL."
Jones-Drew, who led the NFL in rushing last season, has two years remaining on a five year contract.
"He's not holding out to get a new contract now, he's holding out to get an extension," Madden said. "He's already made a commitment for two more years, so that's a difficult one to swallow."
In baseball, after being thrown out of a game for arguing balls and strikes Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine is suggesting technology be used to assist umpires. Madden said he's no fan of an automated strike zone.
"I think that's part of baseball," Madden said. "Just the history of the game and being a traditionalist -- dog gone it, don't mess with that... Different umpires have different strike zones and I think that's part of the fun of watching the game, being able to call balls and strikes and talk about an umpire's strike zone." (7:35)
