Daily Madden: It Won't Be A Tebow Circus In New England
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Former Jets quarterback Tim Tebow has signed a two year deal with the New England Patriots. But John Madden told the KCBS morning crew fans shouldn't expect Tebow to be the center of attention.
"I think he'll be doing whatever (Patriots coach) Bill Belichick wants him to do that's going to help his team win, just like all the other players," Madden said.
Tebow may be listed as the third string quarterback, but John said you won't see him replacing starter Tom Brady for special plays.
"Bill Belichick is a smart guy and he has a smart staff. He's not going to mess with Tom Brady... He's not going to take Brady out and run Tebow in to run some read option play. He won't do that. (He may be used as) a tight end. It might be an H-back. It may be a hybrid position."
Tebow was at the center of controversy in New York, as Jets fans debated whether he should replace struggling quarterback Mar Sanchez.
"The Jets made a circus out of it, and every week it was Tebow or Sanchez," the former coach said. "None of that stuff is going to happen in New England... There's a place for Tim Tebow in the NFL. There is a position, because he's a tough guy. He can run. He has some skills. He's smart. It's just finding it. I know that position isn't quarterbacking in New England... But there will be a role for him." (8:15)
