Daily Madden: Is Yasiel Puig An All-Star?
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Los Angeles phenom Yasiel Puig has posted All-Star numbers in recharging the Dodgers since joining the team June 2. But has he played long enough to be considered for the National League All-Star team? Some players don't think so. "I think he should be on the All-Star team," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.
"This is partly a popularity contest, we all know that... Right now this is a guy (fans) want to see." Puig is hitting .443 with eight home runs in 27 games. "I bet it's one of the last things right now on (Giants manager) Bruce Bochy's mind," Madden said. "Oh boy, is he down."
The Giants have lost eight of nine, were the victims of Reds pitcher Homer Bailey's no-hitter Tuesday night, and are in the National League West cellar. "I always looked at baseball managers and said the one thing I admired about them is they have so many games they can't get up or down," said Madden. "They have to have an even keel, and they have to act the same way when you win as when you lose. Watching Bruce Bochy is really tough. His dauber is really down."
Prized NBA free agent Dwight Howard is pondering his choices among the five teams courting him, including the Warriors. Madden said it's not always an easy decision. "I remember when (Denver quarterback) Peyton Manning went through it a year ago," John said. "You know they said, 'Peyton, he can pick wherever he wants to go and they'll pay him a lot of money.' But he has a wife, he has a family, where do you want to live. I mean there's a lot more to it than whose money do you take."
