Daily Madden: Is Torre's Departure An Opportunity For La Russa?
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Joe Torre resigned from his executive vice president position with Major League Baseball Wednesday to join a group trying to buy the Los Angeles Dodgers.
John Madden told the KCBS morning crew former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa would be an excellent replacement.
"He's not through with baseball," John said. "When you give your whole life to baseball and you walk away, you just don't walk away from baseball the rest of your life. He's going to be involved with it one way or another."
Is La Russa a suit and tie type of guy?
"I wouldn't put a suit and tie on him. That's one of these things that these leagues do wrong with these guys... It's usually a blue blazer, grey slacks, and they all look the same. And then they walk around, and instead of Tony La Russa and Joe Torre baseball guy, they look like, you know, Joe Torre or Tony La Russa (the) suit."
In other sports management news, the Indianapolis Colts fired vice president Bill Polian and general manager Chris Polian this week.
"I was shocked," Madden said. "Especially Bill Polian. He's been in the league for so long, and been successful for so long, and is a real leader. (He) is powerful within the league... To lose a guy like Bill Polian, or to let him go at this time, was a real shock." (6:50)
