Daily Madden: Indy's Rough Start Without Manning
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - Just two years after they started 14-0, the Indianapolis Colts are winless in seven games.
John Madden told the KCBS morning crew the poor showing is all about the loss of quarterback Peyton Manning to injury.
"The team was built around him. I mean he was the core," Madden said. "The one thing that they knew with Peyton Manning, that no matter what you did defensively, he was going to score a lot of points. Now (the Colts) have to play like most other teams.
"Their team wasn't built for that. Their defense wasn't built for that. Their offensive line wasn't built for that. Their running game wasn't built for that. So when (Manning) goes out, then boom, all the cards fall down."
The former coach said he's noticed a trend in comments by coaches and managers this season.
"Anytime anything goes wrong, if you're a coach or a manager, take the blame for it," Madden said. "'It's all my fault. Everything is my fault.' All the coaches are doing that now and then repeating it. I'd be worried someone would agree with me." (7:30)
