Daily Madden: Hockey Fights 'Look Stupid'
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The NHL playoffs have seen numerous penalties and suspensions and accusations that some players are trying to injure opponents.
"I can't understand what they're doing," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "I know that it's the playoffs and the intensity rises during playoffs, but some of the stuff that they do and that fighting looks downright stupid... The more you get into that type of stuff, the more you get away from really playing the game. Now I'm sure a real hockey enthusiast would say 'you don't know what you're talking about. It's part of the game.' But if some of the things they're doing to each other are really part of the game, it shouldn't be."
49 year old Jamie Moyer became the oldest pitcher to win a major league game when the Rockies beat the Padres Tuesday night.
"As you get older and you lose velocity, then you go from your arm to your mind, and you just know how to play the game," Madden said, comparing Moyer to former Raiders quarterback and kicker George Blanda. "As you lose things with age, you gain them with experience, and it balances out to being able to have some success."
The NFL schedule was released Tuesday, with every team playing a Thursday night game for the first time. "I'm not for that," Madden said. "I don't think that the body really has time to play a Sunday game and then play Thursday night. And then it's a real disadvantage for the visiting team." (7:45)
