Daily Madden: 'Good As Ever' Manning Dominates 49ers
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The 49ers couldn't compete with Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos Sunday night, losing 42-17. The game started with a 49ers three and out followed by a Bronco's touchdown drive.
"It's not going to be one of those games (where) three field goals and a touchdown and you're going to win," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.
"You won't beat Peyton Manning that way, because he is going to score touchdowns... (The 49ers) really had to match them touchdown for touchdown, and I never felt early on that they were going to be able to do that."
With a struggling 49ers offense, Manning took control of the game early.
"He's as good as he's ever been," Madden said. "He not only scores touchdowns, but he keeps the ball. He doesn't get a lot of big chunks on you, but he will get a lot of time of possession, which obviously means that your offense is sitting there watching this. And, like it or not, when they do that, they get a little anxious. You know, like 'Doggone we've been over there for a long time, we got to go make something happen right now.' And a lot of times when you do that you get off your plan and you make mistakes."
The 49ers game plan includes a steady running game.
"But there's a point when the score gets to be a certain number," John said, "and you have the score and the time against you. And you have to throw running out the door. And that's what the 49ers did." (7:05)
