Daily Madden: Giants And Fans Singing In The Rain
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - In a ninth inning downpour, Giants fans roared even louder as their team finished off the Cardinals 9-0 to win their second pennant in three years.
"I'm a sucker for weather," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "When I see weather and a game, man, I can't leave that. And then it's kind of team against team, man against man, player against player, and then both teams against the weather. And I thought that was pretty good."
Madden said the Giants' early lead helped build the crowd excitement.
"You have to give fans something to cheer about," the former coach said. "If you do well, they will cheer. If you don't do well, they can't cheer."
Shortstop Brandon Crawford shut down an early Cardinals rally with a leaping catch. "Mrs. Crawford has to be very happy today," he said. "That was big, big, big, big, big. So it'll be an easy day in class today."
Crawford's mother is a grade school teacher in Pleasanton.
In football news, the NFL is investigating the Chargers for allegedly using a sticky substance on their hands in their loss to the Broncos. 'Stickum' was banned by the NFL in the 1980s.
"I really don't believe it," Madden said. "Those gloves (receivers use) took the place of 'Stickum.' So any advantage that the players had when they used 'Stickum,' the players have that same advantage with those gloves." (9:00)
