Daily Madden: The Unanticipated Rise Of Vogelsong

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - John Madden discussed Ryan Vogelsong's amazing season for the Giants with the KCBS morning crew Tuesday, following the starter's strong performance Monday night against the Dogers.

The one-time Giants prospect, who now leads the league in ERA, was considered a longshot to ever return to the team when he was signed this offseason following nearly a decade of struggles.

"You've seen the opposite, where people have success early," said madden. "But to have this kind of success late in his career, it's hard to explain."

Madden said the return to relevance of the Pittsburgh Pirates is similarly remarkable. He said he isn't really sure what led to nearly 20 years of mediocrity.

The NFL Labor stoppage appears close to an end. The former coach said that may force organizations to scramble ahead of the opening of training camps.

"I think this lockout is going to be over shortly," he said. "Then it's going to be a circus...signing draft picks, signing free agents."

One of the rumored elements of the deal is a big increase in compensation to retired players.

"Everyone was for it, it was just a thing that needed to get done," said Madden. "I heard that they are putting a billion dollars toward it."
