Daily Madden: Everyone Is Celebrating Lincecum's No-Hitter
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - As their team enters the All-Star break six and a half games back in their division, Giants fans found something to feel good about with Tim Lincecum's no-hitter against the Padres in San Diego Saturday night.
"Watching it, you kind of become part of it," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "I thought it was interesting that towards the end there, the whole crowd was rooting for him. Of course they were ahead 9-0 too... But I think there's something to that, that you're seeing something historical happen, and you take a little ownership in it; and when you take a little ownership in it, it gives you a little more excitement... You become part of it. The rest of your life you can say that you were there at that game in San Diego when Tim Lincecum pitched a no-hitter."
Lincecum threw 148 pitches to complete the game, with some observers questioning whether manger Bruce Bochy should have left him in that long.
"Had he taken him out -- without an injury or without Lincecum asking to come out -- had he unilaterally gone out there and taken him out, there would have been heck of a lot more second guessing," Madden said. "That thought never crossed my mind. I know the pitch count was going up, but even in the ninth inning he was throwing nasty stuff." (6:35)
