Daily Madden: ESPY Awards Fill TV Sports Vacuum
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The ESPY Awards come at a time when both basketball players and baseball players sit idle for just a couple of days.
Watching the ceremony Wednesday night on television brought back fun memories for John Madden, such as the year he spent the night hanging out with former NBA All-Star player Bill Walton.
Coach Madden reminisced with the KCBS morning crew about talking basketball and football with Walton, whose brother played for the Dallas Cowboys.

But it's not all shop talk when celebrity sports figures get together behind the scenes, as Madden quickly discovered when he found himself alone in a room with Serena Williams as the two of them waited for interviewers to appear.
Williams barely mentioned tennis, Madden said, because she was frustrated that every time she tried to sneak away to the mall for a shopping break, someone would drag her back to practice.
While Madden could sympathize with her desire for some down time, the coach confessed that, for his part, the only times he could remember consciously seeking out shopping malls typically involved the availability of air conditioning.
Listen to the John Madden segment live weekday mornings at 8:15 on KCBS All News 740 AM/106.9 FM.
