Daily Madden: Doughnuts In The Bullpen
OAKLAND (KCBS) - The Oakland A's edged the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 in 15 innings over five hours Monday night. Oakland reliever Jerry Blevins said the team shared a box of donuts from a fan just before the game-ending rally. John Madden told the KCBS morning crew he wasn't surprised the donuts came from the bullpen.
"Those guys have a lot of time," Madden said. "They're kind of like the kickers. They spend a lot of time together kind of hanging around not doing much, and then they do a little something... The best stories of stuff that happened during the game happened in the bullpen."
On the other side of the bay, San Francisco relievers had less success, giving up late inning runs as the Mets beat the Giants 8-7 in 10 innings. New York's Scott Hairston hit homers in the eighth and the 10th. He's hit more of his career home runs against the Giants than any other team.
"Success kind of breeds confidence," Madden said. "When you've had success against someone or in a certain place or whatever, when you go there that air of confidence comes."
John is riding the Madden Cruiser to the Packers training camp in Green Bay Wednesday before heading to the Hall of Fame festivities in Canton this weekend.
"This is a big week," he said. "Football (is) starting, you're out there at training camp, you got the smells of training camp and everything. It just kind of brings you back, you know, that this is where you should be." (8:20)
