Daily Madden: Do College Grads Make Better NFL Players?
(CBS SF) - The Wall Street Journal reports some NFL teams are favoring college graduates or athletes on track to graduate in making their draft and free-agent selections.
"Chip Kelly was one of those guys that wants his players to have the full college experience and he used the word 'graduate,'" John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "That's the type of player that he wants."
Kelly told ESPN he likes to see evidence of mental toughness and intelligence.
"This is going to have to be studied again and reevaluated," Madden said, noting the high number of players who left college early to enter the draft this year. "We had almost 100 players (who were) underclassmen come out this year, come out for the draft. I'm not sure of the facts, but I think it was like half of them were drafted. So someone is selling these kids on coming out early and you'll be drafted, and half of them weren't drafted." (7:15)
