Daily Madden: Defense, Romo Lead Cowboys To Victory
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – Tony Romo tossed three touchdowns and threw for over 300 yards and the defense harassed Eli Manning all night as the Dallas Cowboys defeated the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants 24-17 on Wednesday night.
John Madden told the KCBS morning crew that Romo really impressed him in the game.
"I thought Dallas looked good. I thought Tony Romo looked really good," Madden said. "Watching Dallas, their defense is better this year. That was one of the things last year that they couldn't get by with, a poor defense, and they looked a little better last night."
Among his other observations, Madden said he thought for at least the first game of the season, the replacement referees didn't make themselves a story.
"They've always said about officials – if you go through a game and really don't notice them (the officials), they've done a good job. If officials stand out in a game, they've probably done a lousy job. I thought they did a very good job (last night)."
Madden also touched on the death of former Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell, who passed away at the age of 87.
"Where Art was big was in television. He was the owner that ran the television department of the NFL when it wasn't very big," he said. "And he was the only guy that did it. If you ask who is responsible for Monday Night Football, it was Pete Rozelle and Art Modell."
He said that Modell's legacy may never be the same in Cleveland after moving the team out of the city and firing legendary coach Paul Brown.
