Daily Madden: Defense, Discipline Key To 49ers Victory
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The San Francisco 49ers held the Carolina Panthers to three points in two goal line stands on their way to a 23-10 NFC Divisional playoff victory in Charlotte Sunday.
"(The Panthers) have a very good offensive line," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "They have a big quarterback who can run the ball in addition to the running backs. They should have an advantage in that situation. But the 49ers got penetration, took the advantage and just handled that goal line... "
"The 49ers played very, very well period. But doggone it when you can go on the road and make a goal line stand like that a couple of times to win a divisional game to put you in the championship game, that's really big."
The Panthers appeared undisciplined throughout the game. "That happens when a game is built up as a physical game," Madden said. "Then they think that they have to do it before the play and after the play. You know that old saying that nothing good happens after midnight or whatever when you're out? It's the same with football. Nothing good happens in football after the whistle. Nothing good happens in football after the play is over."
