Daily Madden: Decision Day Near On Peyton Manning
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The Indianapolis Colts will have to make a decision soon on whether quarterback Peyton Manning will remain with the team.
"That's going to be a tough one," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. Manning is coming off a series of neck surgeries that sidelined him last season and his health continues to be a concern.
"Are the nerves fully regenerated and does he have full strength in his arm?" asked Madden. "If he doesn't, is he going to get it in a month or two or three...So there's a little gamble right there."
It would be difficult for the Colts to part with Manning, who's been a star in since being drafted first overall in the 1998 draft.
"He'd like to stay in Indy. He's Peyton Manning and he's the Colts, and he would like to end up that way. But that's going to be a tough decision for (Jim) Irsay, the owner."
Madden said he expects the NFL to release details of an investigation and announce penalties against the New Orleans Saints by the end of the month. The team allegedly had a bounty system that paid players for knocking opponents out of a game.
"It's going to be cleared out pretty soon, because they have the owners meetings coming up (the last week in March), and they're going to want to have this done before those owners meetings." (8:20)
