Daily Madden: Allen Promises Disciplined Raiders Team
OAKLAND (KCBS) - Dennis Allen, the new coach of the Oakland Raiders, said Monday the team has enough talent to compete for a championship and "will play with discipline."
The Raiders set the NFL record for penalties in 2011 - something Madden said needs to change.
"The ones that really kill them are discipline things are the pre-snap penalties, ones where they line up in the neutral zone, they line up off-sides, they have too many men in the huddle, they jump early," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "Those things shouldn't happen on any level."
Madden said it needs to be better addressed in practice, with more emphasis on getting it right than running a long series of scripted plays in an up-tempo offense.
"They're more interested in running a lot of plays than in coaching... I've always been one that you have to say 'okay stop right here, do it again, get back in the huddle, go back up to the line.' That's the kind of coach I was, and no one does it any more."
John said he likes the idea of letting fans in to watch the Super Bowl Media Day interviews in Indianapolis, but doesn't like the fact fans have to pay to do so.
"We always talk about 'let's do something for the fans,'" John said. "Then dog gone it, let them in free... You don't have to drain the fans everywhere you get a chance to drain them." (8:20)
