Daily Madden: Chip Kelly Brings New Pace To NFL
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Coach Chip Kelly's high-speed, no huddle offense is on display at the Philadelphia Eagles mini camp this month.
"Everyone is interested to see what Chip Kelly is going to do," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "It's the tempo of the game... They can just go so fast that the defense can't substitute. And the officials don't have to let you substitute unless they do... That's their whole thing -- for them to get the defense where they're not ready."
Kelly also emphasizes fitness, including personalized smoothies adjusted to a player's nutrition and exercise plan, and a sleep regimen.
"He has a thing where if you practice this many hours then you have to have that much sleep," Madden said. "And then you either have to adjust and have less practice or no practice, or you have to give them more sleep... He has a lot of those types of things, and other clubs are watching to see if he's going to be able to (make that work) in the NFL."
Joe Montana's son Nate worked out at the 49ers' local pro day Wednesday. He's considered a long shot to get a QB spot in the NFL.
"If he was one of those tackles it would be a little easier," Madden said. "Or if he was a tight end or if he was a defensive back or something.
But you know being a Montana and being a quarterback, that's a tough act to follow." (8:15)
