Daily Madden: Passing The New Norm In Goal Line Offense
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - It seems short yardage touchdown passes in the NFL are now more common than short yardage running touchdowns.
"Goal line running is terrible," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "They don't do it anymore. If you look at the way linemen play, they don't block with their shoulders anymore. They block with their hands. They don't always get in three point stances, they get in two point stances. They don't bend and drive, they stand straight up and push. And that's not conducive to goal line play. I've said that for the last couple of years, that when you're down on the one two yard line, that's a passing play now."
The Houston Texans, surprising losers of ten games in a row, face the Jaguars in Jacksonville Thursday night.
"I wasn't one of those people who picked Houston to be in the Super Bowl, but I probably was one of those people who picked Houston to be in the playoffs," Madden said.
Meanwhile Jacksonville has improved through the season, winning three of their last four.
"I saw them live (early in the season) and I thought it was easy to say that they were the worst teams in the NFL," John said. "(But) teams do practice, they do get some guys healthy, they get some guys back... They're one of the teams that is moving up." (6:05)
