Daily Madden: Can 2 Former Stars Aid 49er Defense?
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The 49ers are talking to Charles Woodson and Nnamdi Asomugha, both free agent defensive backs. John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew there could be room for both on the team.
"I would think that one obviously is a corner and that's Asomugha, and he's going to play the outside perimeter position. And then Charles Woodson plays a lot of slot receiver and a lot of what would be the nickle linebacker... If they were to sign them both, Asomugha would stay outside as the corner. Woodson would be the slot corner or the fifth defensive back."
Can the 49ers afford both given salary cap restrictions?
"That's all supply and demand (and) I don't know how much demand there is for either guy," Madden said.
Woodson is 36; Asomugha is 31.
"If San Francisco does (sign them), it's going to be a big, big discount from what they were paid in Green Bay and Philadelphia... They're not going to get paid again for what they've done in the past. They'll be paid for what they can do now and what they can do in the future. And those are two totally different numbers."
In Denver, Broncos president John Elway said defensive end Elvis Dumervil's 2013 salary is "out of whack" and needs to be restructured.
"They're the guys that put him there," Madden said. "They start to say 'it's out of whack.' Well then you're out of whack. John Elway is a good guy, but the Denver Broncos are out of whack." (7:45)
