Daily Madden: Belichick's Masterful Comeback
SAN FRANCISCO (KBCS) - John Madden said coaching was the key in the Patriots' 34-31 overtime victory after they trailed the Denver Broncos 24-0 at halftime Sunday night.
"When you're 24-0 down, it's funny how people think (New England coach Bill) Belichick will be mad and he'll be yelling at them in the locker room and straighten them out and (have) them come out and play hard. That's the last thing he does," Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "A good coach is a teacher and he's coach, and when you're down 24-0, you need coaching. And the experienced coach fixes things... You have to fix what went wrong and then come back. And they did a perfect example of that. They're down 24-0. Now you have to get a drive and score that first touchdown and then work off that. And that's exactly what they did."
There were turnovers on both sides in the cold, windy weather.
"Everyone is going to have trouble dealing with weather," Madden said. "Whether it's the fans trying to stay warm, or a guy trying to throw the ball or a punt returner trying to catch it, or whatever, those are tough conditions...It's hard and you have to play through it." (7:15)
