Daily Madden: Be Patient With Kaepernick
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - In the wake of the end zone interception that ended the 49ers season in Seattle Sunday, some fans are questioning the play of quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
"He just needs more experience," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "He really hasn't even played two full years. And the most difficult position to play in pro football is quarterback. And it takes a lot of reps, a lot of game time playing and decision making during games... He's going to be fine. He just needs more time, and with that time he's going to be more consistent. Any young quarterback can show brilliance and they can show that they're really playing well and then they'll have a bad play here and there because they don't have enough experience to have real consistency yet."
Madden agrees Kaepernick can be faulted for the interception at the end of the NFC Championship game.
"He shouldn't have thrown it there where he threw it," Madden said. "It's on first down, so you throw that to the back pylon, and you throw it over the back pylon, which is the end of the end zone. And you put it in a place where your guy catches it and it's a touchdown or it goes out of bounds and it's an incomplete pass and you go second and ten. He threw it a little short... It's not that (the 49ers) need a whole overhaul or a lot of change. They just need a play here or a play there." (7:25)
