Daily Madden: Awareness Is Key To Addressing Sports Concussions
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The American Academy of Neurology has issued new recommendations for athletes suspected of suffering concussions, including that they be removed from competition immediately and returned only when they're cleared by a health professional.
John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew everyone around contact sports needs to be involved.
"It's also the athletes and the players themselves and their parents," Madden said. "If they come home and they talk about having headaches, or they're having trouble concentrating or watching TV... they have to be watched. It's not just the medical professional that has to do it. It's the coach, it's any observer, it's the kid, it's the parents, it's the teachers... The more awareness we can create, the closer we're going to get to helping (reduce injury.)"
The Santa Clara City Council is scheduled to vote on financial concessions to the NFL to bring the Super Bowl to the 49ers new stadium in 2016.
"(The NFL) takes all the money, they really do," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "It's their game. It's their brand and they're going to get all the money for doing it. And you have to give them all the money."
The city council is expected to agree to waive ticket surcharges and hotel taxes for league employees as the city competes with Miami for the opportunity to host Super Bowl L. The NFL's decision is expected in May. (8:30)
