Daily Madden: A's, Angels Grind Out Record Number Of Innings
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels battled in the longest major league game this year - and the longest ever in Oakland - before the A's pulled out a 10-8 win in 19 innings.
And, of course, not every sports fan stayed up to watch.
"No, I didn't," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "But I saw the highlights of it this morning."
"It's good it wasn't like a kid having a birthday party there last night, on a school night," Madden joked. "And what if the kids wanted to stay?"
Only a handful of most hardiest of fans stayed until the end among the original 11,000 or so at the game.
The game lasted so long, the A's went through all their pitchers and outfielder Seth Smith was on tap to pitch the 20th and 21st inning if the game had continued.
"That's why in baseball they call them (the head coaches) managers ... they have to manage all those things."
"You never know what's gonna come in extra innings ... you have to be able to manage it through its entirety."
